My Trip To New Orleans

I’m going to be honest; I haven’t really had any blog-worthy events since school started. So, I’m going to be dedicating the next couple of posts to my adventures over the summer. To start us off, I’m going to dive into my experience in New Orleans, Louisiana from earlier this summer.

My friend, Makala, and I decided on a whim to take a trip to New Orleans at the end of May. After spending a year in a world steeped in caution from the pandemic, we were very anxious to start traveling again. However, we did keep in mind that the concern for contracting COVID-19 was still very present. So, we took every precaution possible during our trip. I must admit, it was so nice to see a new place and to take a vacation following the school year.

Now on to the good parts, the details! One of my most prominent memories of New Orleans is going to a Cafe Beignet, located within walking distance of our hotel, and trying beignets for the first time. This is obviously a rite of passage when it comes to visiting New Orleans. I had such high hopes for our first taste and let me tell you, they did not disappoint! Beignets are insanely good and getting to enjoy them fresh out of the fryer and topped with heaps of powdered sugar is a life altering experience. I highly recommend, if you ever get the chance, to stop by a Cafe Beignet or Café Du Monde and try some delicious beignets.

Outside of all the amazing food we got to try, we made sure to hit up some of the most famous spots. We were only there for three days so we didn’t get to visit all the sites, but the ones we did get around to were worth it. Of course, we walked Bourbon Street, which was filled with other tourists and was lined with plenty of bars and shops. We also took a moment to stop by Marie Laveau’s House of Voodoo, which was such an interesting experience and super cool to walk through. I was able to notice some crossovers between the Voodoo practice and Brujería, which is a separate practice found in my own Mexican culture. We also made sure to take a quick visit through the French Quarter, seeing as that is another rite of passage when traveling through New Orleans. Another great experience we had was a trip to JAMNOLA which is an experiential pop-up made up of multiple exhibits designed to highlight the heart of the city’s culture. The exhibits were packed with amazing art, music, and photo opportunities.

Overall, the trip was amazing and I’m looking forward to visiting New Orleans again sometime in the future. Traveling is a huge passion of mine, so I’m glad I got the opportunity to take a trip and experience a new place full of culture and adventure.
