This chapter covered blogs, vlogs, podcasts and webinars. All of which are super interesting topics. However, for this post I want to focus on vlogs. I personally love watching vlogs, especially vlogs that cover things like “what I eat in a day” and vacations. Watching food vlogs helps to give me inspiration for new foods to try out. Also, watching travel vlogs gives me ideas for new vacation destinations and gives me inspiration for sites to visit and activities to do in said vacation spot.
When it comes to why vlogs are so popular, the textbook points out a few different reasons. However, the one that sticks out the most to me is being able to get an in-depth look into the life of the content creator. I agree with this because I can absolutely see the appeal in viewing content that is much more authentic in comparison to watching content that seems more staged. Getting the chance to see the reality of someone’s life, especially an influencer’s, makes that person seem much more down to earth and like a regular person. This helps create more of a connection between the viewer and the content creator.
I also like that the textbook points out how vlogs can be shared to social networks like Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube. Because, when I think of vlogs the first platform to come to my mind is YouTube. But I completely recognize that it’s growing increasingly popular to post this type of content across multiple platforms. For example, Lauren Giraldo, an influencer, posts mini vlogs onto her Instagram account. Which I think are much easier to digest when you don’t have enough time to watch a lengthier video. In addition, I’ve come across some vlog type content by multiple creators on TikTok.
Overall, I enjoyed reading this chapter and learning about blogs, vlogs, podcasts and webinars. In my opinion, the popularity of vlogs will only continue to grow. Especially seeing as it is a type of content that is easy to create and easy for viewers to engage with.
